Closing Palliative Care in Portimão «never crossed anyone's mind»

The Palliative Care Unit of Portimão is to be maintained «in the same place and with the same people» and will even be reinforced with «a new palliative and convalescent service», already created and under structuring within the Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHA ), which will try to "get more beds in other hospitals in the center", he assured the Sul Informação Peter Nunes.

The chairman of the Board of Directors of the CHA was upset with the disclosure of what he calls "rumours", which he guarantees to have no basis. "I spend the day denying any nonsense that anyone says," he criticized.

This was the reaction of the person responsible for the CHA to the complaint made by several professionals from that health unit., who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of alleged reprisals, that the Board of Directors intended to close that unit, which welcomes terminally ill patients.

With regard to palliative care, "it never crossed anyone's mind to close the service", not least because the ten existing beds in Portimão "are not sufficient for the needs of the region". "Furthermore, even if I wanted to close the service, I would have to give six months' notice and renegotiate with the network", since the service was created with money from the Continuing Care Network and co-financed by the European Union.

“The media should be careful not to consider what anyone says about Hospital de Portimão to be true. The least they can do is not believe in rumours. If one day I decide to close a service, I will announce it myself and then, if I go against what I said before, they have every reason to ask me to explain it to me,” he said.

Closing services, as well as firing employees, once again assured Pedro Nunes, it is not in the plans of the Board of Directors he presides over, only the «reorganization of services» and always «with a view to improving the quality of the service».

As for the news that has been made public, namely in our newspaper, based on testimonies from different sources linked to the Hospital de Portimão and the public health sector in the Algarve, Pedro Nunes believes that «there must be hidden interests behind this, that communication should investigate”.

“For those who are on the board of directors, it becomes annoying to be constantly denying this news. It takes us time to do our work,” he added.
