Those who cannot or do not want to dive to see the old ships of the Portuguese Navy sunk off Alvor will still be able to take a virtual visit to the bottom of the sea. It will be a kind of “submarine”, in the new Center of the Ocean Revival project installed in the Museum of Portimão, which will be inaugurated and open to the public on Friday, September 20th, at 18:30 pm.

To create this innovative nucleus, one of the wings of the Museum's underground cistern was used, where a structure similar to the interior of a submarine was installed, with hatches virtually opened to the Portimão Underwater Park, in order to make the history known. from the sunken ships about three miles from Praia de Alvor, the history of the Ocean Revival project itself, and also following the evolution of marine life in the artificial reefs.

Luís Sá Couto, the main mentor of the Ocean Revival project, explained to Sul Informação that this nucleus at the Portimão Museum cost around 80 euros, entirely supported by Musubmar, the association that promotes the project and has the Subnauta diving company as the major contributor.

The nucleus, he added, will "tell the history of the ships, their crews and patrons", through sophisticated audiovisual means, which include screens LCD where movies will be shown.

«There will be five LCD, each dedicated to its theme, which can be seen through the hatches opened in the “submarine”, as well as pieces taken from the sunken ships», added Sá Couto. All to show a little more of the history of sunken vessels, information intended for those who do not dive, but also for the divers themselves.

José Gameiro, director of the Portimão Museum, highlighted the interest of this new exhibition center, which shows “a facet of a current project, always in constant evolution”.

The day after this inauguration, Saturday, September 21, at 13 pm, it will be the hydrographic vessel “Almeida Carvalho” sunk, fourth and last of the fleet of ex-ships ceded to the Ocean Revival project by the Portuguese Navy and also made up of the corvette “Oliveira e Carmo”, the frigate “Comandante Hermenegildo Capelo” and the patrol “Zambeze”.

It will be the end point of a project that aims to make the Algarve a important diving tourism site at European level.
