Algarve swimmers with Down's Syndrome set European records

Swimmers Filipe Santos, from O2 – Portimão, and José Vieira, from Louletano, broke the DSISO 2013 European record in the 200m Mariposa and 200m Bruços, respectively.

The DSISO 2013 European Championship, for people with Down Syndrome, took place in the city of Estarreja and was attended by 14 teams with about 170 swimmers.

O2 swimmer Filipe Santos, in addition to Gold in the 200m Mariposa, achieved Gold in the 50m Freestyle, Silver in the 50m Mariposa, Bronze in the 100m Mariposa and Bronze in the 400m Freestyle.

José Vieira achieved the European record in the 200m Bruços, Gold in the 50m Bruços and Silver in the 10m0 Bruços.

The Portuguese team finished the European Championship with 12 gold medals, 13 silver and seven bronze.

The preparation of these athletes for the World Championship, which will take place in Mexico, in 2014 is now starting.

In the Algarve, swimming with children and young people with Down syndrome is still underdeveloped. O2 – Portimão and Louletano accept children and young people who want to embrace this sport.
