The biggest event dedicated to birds in Portugal will animate the village of Sagres during the first weekend of october and will have diversified activities spread across different locations in the village. Registration for the numerous nature activities that will take place from October 4th to 6th are already open.

This year the Bird Watching Festival It is promoted by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo and the Vicentina Association, being the first of several events within the scope of the PRODER project «Another Algarve», and has the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds and Almargem as organizing entities.

Although the main attraction of the event are birds, this year there are also field trips and mini-courses on other topics such as astronomy, mushrooms, nocturnal butterflies, sharks, and much more.

This diversification of activities is intended, according to the promoters, «to enhance and make known the natural heritage of the region, investing in the development of nature tourism and also meeting the objectives of the project in which the event fits».

As has been customary, it will also be possible to participate in dolphin watching activities or even take a ride on horseback or in the company of pack donkeys. The goal is to complement bird watching with other activities related to nature contemplation, which satisfy the whole family.

The Sagres Peninsula, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and is one of the most important areas of the Algarve and the country for birdlife.

This place is home to unique species in the region and is the scene of a natural phenomenon that, in Portugal, is not similar – the autumnal migration of gliding birds.

From August to November, this area becomes the main migratory corridor in the country for storks, eagles, vultures, hawks, falcons, etc., being possible to observe practically all species of gliding birds that occur in Portugal, as well as some rarities. Sagres is also a very interesting place to observe marine birds, steppe birds, passerines, among others.

Local agents, including accommodation, restaurants and tourist entertainment, joined together to receive the participants in the best possible way, offering special prices.
