Tavira will host, starting today, Friday, the Mediterranean Diet Fair, an event that goes far beyond gastronomy and intends to affirm and celebrate a way of life and traditions that are still very much alive in our country.

The Fair, which opens at 18 pm, will have its base at Rua do Cais, next to the River Gilão, but will have activities in various parts of the city.

In addition to tasty regional and national dishes and products, which can be tasted in several sessions, there is a strong bet on the musical poster, which also has a flavor of tradition.

Celina Piedade, Custódio Castelo and the Algarve's «Marenostrum» are the headliners and will perform today, tomorrow and Sunday, respectively, at 22 pm, in Praça da República. The main artists are just a small part of the offer, which also includes folklore groups and the voices and instruments of various traditional music groups.

Animation that complements the gastronomic part, the central element of the fair. Anyone who goes to Tavira this weekend can learn how to cook dishes that are part of the Mediterranean Diet menu, in free cooking classes which will be promoted by Docapesca, in partnership with the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School.

In these cooking workshops, Octopus and Mackerel will be the main ingredient, but there will be no lack of products that are the trademark of the Mediterranean Diet, such as olive oil, wine, bread and garlic, among others.

For those who prefer to jump directly to the tasting part of the delicacies, there will also be many opportunities. Today, at 20 pm, there is a «Mediterranean Diet Product Tasting».

Tomorrow, Saturday, at 10 am, the «Algarve Wines, Olives and Honey Show» opens at the Agrarian Post of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries, in Tavira, an initiative that will last until the end of Sunday and where it will be promoted testing and selling products. Also on Saturday, the vessel «Voz do Campo» opens to the public, to taste stew and roast fish, at Lota de Tavira.

Products associated with the Mediterranean Diet can also be purchased at the Producers' Market, which will have 50 operators, most of them from the Algarve. The Mediterranean Diet Fair will still count in your program with colloquia, guided visits to the Museum of Tavira and the Islamic heritage, seed collection workshops and gastronomy demonstrations, among other activities.

For those who want to know even more about this gastronomic trend, the Portuguese Association of Dietitians will give food counseling sessions every day. This Friday, the sessions run until 20 hours. On Saturday and Sunday the APD will be available from 10 am to 22 pm and 21 pm, respectively, with a lunch break. The association will also measure the Body Mass Index.

The first edition of the event takes place a few months before the Portuguese candidacy, together with six other countries, for the Mediterranean Diet for Intangible Heritage of Humanity is voted on by UNESCO. Tavira is the Portuguese representative community in the bid, which also includes Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus and Morocco.
