The Flamenco Festival in Lagos, which starts tomorrow and runs until Saturday, September 14th, celebrates its 12th edition this year, with shows of enormous visual and sound beauty.

The three ways of seeing and feeling flamenco, singing, touching and dancing, merge and become spectacle, avant-garde spectacle, fantasy and flamenco illusion, sounds orchestrated under the rhythm and purity of flamenco.

There are three shows where the dreams of its members come to life. From September 12th to 14th, the Centro Cultural de Lagos is once again the epicenter of the oldest flamenco festival held in Portugal.

João Pedro Vieira, director of the event, explained to the Sul Informação how the idea of organizing a flamenco festival in Lagos came about: “in 2000, we organized a flamenco show at the Lagos Auditorium and the space was sold out. The audience, mostly foreigners, congratulated us at the end of the show and suggested that we organize an annual event dedicated to this genre of universal music and dance. We decided to accept this challenge, and that's how the first flamenco festival in Portugal appeared, which is now in its 12th edition».

And has it been easy for a festival that has been organized continuously for 12 years? «It has been possible to keep this festival due to the support of the public», replies João Pedro Vieira.

«In the first eight editions, we presented two shows. In 2010, we decided to take a risk and start programming three shows at each festival. Throughout these 11 editions we have always been sold out and we hope to continue on this path», added the person responsible for the event.

João Pedro Vieira adds that «this festival consists of concerts in which the different arts of flamenco are represented. Magic guitars with their own identity, a ball of beauty and passion and, above all, voices full of emotion and celebration. It is a festival that bets on a balanced program that brings together well-established artists with young flamenco references. Over the years, names that today are great figures in flamenco art have passed through this festival».

This, which is the 12th Festival, starts on Thursday, the 12th, with the Cuadro Flamenco «Puro y Jondo», which includes Eva Manzano and Alberto Sellés (ball), Miguel Pérez (guitar) and Manuel Romero (vocals and clapping).

It is a show in which the most intrinsic feelings of the human being are recreated, through singing, touching and flamenco dancing, such as pain, anger, anguish, but also the most festive moments, through joys e teahouses.

On stage, the masterful touch of conductor Miguel Pérez's guitar guides the step of musicians and Dancers, who exalt themselves with the duende of your guitar. This great interpreter of flamenco guitar is considered one of the best flamenco dance accompaniment guitarists today.

On Friday, September 13th, it will be the turn of Cuadro Flamenco «Luz de Luna», where the ball is performed by Luna Fabiola and Gonzalo Quintero, the guitar by Juan Torres and the voice and clapping by Jesus Flores.

«Luz de Luna» is the name given to this singing, guitar and dancing formation composed by a new generation of Andalusian artists, who want to recover the splendor of the ancient flamenco tradition with all its “compass" (rhythm).

Over the course of approximately 65 minutes, the spectator will have the opportunity to see different “sticks” and enjoy tanguillos, teahouses, soles, joys… and appreciate, the differences between solo and accompaniment guitar, singing “p'alante” and the singing that accompanies the dance, and some brushstrokes of pure dance.

Finally, on Saturday, September 14th, the Cuadro Flamenco «Latido Flamenco» (ball: Jesus Herrera & Lola Jaramilla / guitar: Tudela / voice and clapping: Cheito) will take the stage.

Jesus Herrera (Pémio Nacional de Baile Flamenco 2005 by Joys) and Lola Jaramilla (Premio Nacional de Baile Flamenco 2006 by tarantos) are the soul of this show, which travels through different paths ”sticks” of flamenco, giving each one the feeling and purity they require.
