The Piaget Institute, through its School of Health, in Silves, has in its training offer for 2013-2014 a new degree, Occupational Therapy, unique in the Algarve.

The Occupational Therapist promotes the mental, emotional or physical capacities of the user, minimizing the difficulties caused by physical or mental deficiencies that prevent them from living fully and independently.

The qualification allows access to the professional title of Occupational Therapist, belonging to the professional career of diagnostic and therapeutic technicians.

António Duarte, coordinator of this degree, highlights the good employability of this course, stating that «in the Algarve, the offer of employment is greater than the demand, namely in public-private entities, in the area of the Ministry of Education, in Geriatrics and social solidarity institutions .

The official adds that "this degree is structured and based on evidence-based teaching and clinical practice." Thus, «in addition to classroom training in a theoretical and theoretical-practical context, students will have the opportunity to be accompanied in classes we job and in clinical trial practices'.

António Duarte stresses, on the other hand, that graduates in Occupational Therapy, as health professionals, “may perform functions in hospitals, Health Centres, Specialized Institutions (namely rehabilitation), Educational Institutions (school groups, garden- childhood and occupational activity centers) and Social Solidarity Institutions (namely nursing homes)».

«If you like humanization and service to the community with physical (motor, mental, cognitive) handicaps, children with learning and behavioral difficulties, don't hesitate to choose a profession», challenges the person responsible for the new degree at ESS de Silves.
