The Pontal Festival, which marks the political re-entry of the PSD, will once again take place on the Calçadão de Quarteira, on August 16, and will be attended by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho.
In 2012, the party organized by PSD/Algarve, took place behind closed doors, in the Aquashow Complex's Ballroom, but this year it returns to a public and more exposed place.
The announcement was made by the Algarve's social democrats this Monday, a few days after the government coalition approved a motion of confidence in the Assembly of the Republic. The return to the more exposed Calçadão de Quarteira is also linked to trust, in this case that of the social-democratic municipal candidates in the upcoming elections.
“This year, the Festa do Pontal takes on special relevance, taking into account the proximity to local elections. It is therefore expected that the president of the PSD, Pedro Passos Coelho, will give a motivational tone to the party's militants, candidates and sympathizers, taking into account the objective of winning the election», considered the PSD/Algarve, in a press release.
«Returning to the Calçadão de Quarteira is also a sign that the PSD gives to the country, reaffirming its popular character and its social-democratic matrix», illustrated the president of the PSD/Algarve.
This return to the Calçadão, taking into account the protests that involved the Festa do Pontal last year, carried out by anti-toll activists on Via do Infante, can also be seen as a test of the population's confidence in the current Government.
The first Festa do Pontal took place in 1976 in Faro, in a pine forest near the beach of Faro, in the Pontal area, and Francisco Sá Carneiro participated. The initiative has since changed location, having been held in downtown Faro and in 2006 it established arraiais in the city of Quarteira. The party usually brings together thousands of militants and supporters of the party.

In its history, the Festa do Pontal counts with the participation of the majority of the Party leaders, namely Francisco Sá Carneiro, Pinto Balsemão, Cavaco Silva, Fernando Nogueira, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Luís Filipe Menezes, Marques Mendes and Pedro Passos Coelho.
