The exhibition “Canned Tops”, from the José Alexandre Pires collection, can be visited from September 2nd to 30th, at the Municipal Library of Silves. The show brings together a vast collection of tins from all over the world.

Born in Portimão, José Alexandre Pires had contact with the world of fishing and canning from an early age, as his father was an industrialist and shipowner.

Attracted by this activity and by collecting, he acquired tins throughout his travels, both in Portugal and abroad. After the Economics course, he specialized as a fish canning technician, having collaborated with Dr. Funestin, director of the Scientific Institute of Fisheries, in Morocco.

His work focused on studies carried out on the cycle of sardines and other pelagic fish, which greatly contributed to an in-depth knowledge of this matter.

He was also dedicated to the study and teaching of conservation techniques, namely raw fish canning, both in Portugal and abroad. He is often invited to lectures related to fishing and canning, among other topics.

The exhibition “Canned Can Tops” can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 19:30 pm, until September 13th. From September 16, the Municipal Library resumes its winter schedule: Mondays and Saturdays, from 14:00 to 19:30, and Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 to 19:30.
