Lagos City Council and Parish Council revitalize the Barão de S. João National Forest

The Town Council of Lagos will sign a Collaboration Protocol with the Parish Council of Barão de S. João for the revitalization and enhancement of the National Forest of Barão de São João and some of its facilities. The draft was made known at the August 7th Chamber Meeting.

The presentation of this project regarding the development of the Mata de Barão de S. João and the revitalization of other equipment located there was entered into the services of the municipality, requesting the Municipality's cooperation, especially with regard to the free provision, to the parish council, of two buildings.

The first, called “Casa do Guarda” (located in the Forest), for the installation and operation of an Environmental Interpretation Centre, and the second, concerning the building called “A Paragem”, located in Rua da Praça, (located in Barão) , with a view to the installation of the Ethnographic Museum (transferring the collection and all the museological support already existing in the Barão Cultural Center to this building).

The municipality was also asked to provide technical support, in the area of ​​Sports, for the resizing and reorganization of the existing Maintenance Circuit in Mata, as well as the availability of a municipal sports technician to organize pedestrian and/or informal sports initiatives. , nature/leisure, with the possibility of prior appointments with schools and associations.

According to the Board, the main objectives of this project are the revitalization, maintenance and recovery of some existing equipment in the Forest, as well as in the Cultural Center and in Aldeia de Barão, enhancing the socialization and settlement of this population, and the subsequent dissemination of its tourist-cultural potential.

In this context, the draft of the Collaboration Protocol to be signed between the Municipality of Lagos and the Parish Council of Barão de S. João was approved, on a date to be confirmed.

The object of the protocol is precisely the transfer, free of charge, of the two aforementioned buildings and the provision of technical support in the area of ​​Sports and in carrying out the necessary artistic works.

This project also foresees the execution of a collection of marble monoliths with engravings, with medium-sized sculptures distributed along the pedestrian path.

In this more cultural context, the dynamization of existing cultural routes is also foreseen, namely the “Passeio dos Poetas”, with poems by popular authorship engraved in the schist stone and distributed along a specific route in the Forest), the “Passeio das Figuras”, by the artist Deodato, with public art figures distributed along some streets of the village of Barão with access to the Forest and the “Passeio A-Ver-O-Mar”, a route with panoramic views over the coast.
