The PCP's parliamentary group wants to see the construction of a bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar, in Spain, and has presented a draft resolution in this regard in the Assembly of the Republic.

The Communists ask the Government to «take the Guadiana International Bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar as a link of regional and national interest, and take the necessary steps – including contacts with the Spanish and Andalusian authorities – with a view to the rapid implementation of this infrastructure, vital for the economic and social development of the North-East Algarve».

Recalling the "accelerated process of depopulation and demographic aging, in addition to a sharp economic decline" that affects that border area between the Algarve and Alentejo, the PCP considered that the construction of this infrastructure "would have a very important impact on boosting the local economy and in the attraction and fixation of new inhabitants».

This is not the only project that has been "postponed sine die" in that area, the communists stressed, giving as an example "the completion of the stretches of the IC 27 linking Alcoutim to IP2 or the desilting of the Guadiana from the mouth to Pomarão".

"Without the necessary public investments, the municipality of Alcoutim, as well as the other municipalities in the interior of the Algarve, will not be able to stop the desertification process and will continue to wither, economically and demographically," they argued.

«The PCP understands that the State must assume responsibility for conducting the process of building the international bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar, developing with the Spanish authorities and the Autonomous Community of Andalusia the necessary steps to ensure funding, carry out preliminary studies and the launch and implementation of the work», summed up that party.
