Street music, video installation, drinks. It is with these three ingredients that the Download 21 project begins tonight, at 00 pm, on the riverside in front of the Portimão Museum, next to the crane.
For three nights, from today until Saturday, the download will be done at this location, and then, in August, over three other nights, it will go to a different space in the city. This is the third year of the event, although it is the first time it has been traveling within the municipality of Portimão.
According to its promoters, the Download Culture Association, the Download 2013 project «turns to a very pertinent issue in the city of Portimão: the distance between citizens and the public space».
«The Museum of Portimão and the Crane, on the riverfront next to the Associação Naval, are the most important physical landmarks in the presence of the canning and fishing industry that culturally marked and defined the society of Portimão during the 1st half of the XNUMXth century. These are spaces of memory and origin for the city, but what does public space represent today?”, they ask.
«The street symbolizes independence and freedom», and the project «intends to offer an active and free program based on the promotion of artists from the region and the country, in an attempt to foster multidisciplinarity and exchange between these agents of musical and artistic production », they add.
«Download means that download platform for mixing and creativity between artists and audience».
Therefore, «in a year in which the (financial) independence of Portugal and its citizens is being questioned, questioning the public space is also questioning the role of the citizen in Portuguese cities. Cities with various problems, with highly transformed experiences in the last 30 years. It is necessary to go back to the spaces of memory and rethink how they belong to everyone, they are public, they must be lived, included in the lives of the inhabitants of a city, in a different way but in continuity through artistic and musical creation. To emphasize that participation is an indispensable right of citizens, but also a duty, as only through its inhabitants can a city have life. Redefine population and space with what is created today. Exercising the freedom to enjoy the city, to occupy the street with music and to get together in an exercise of exchange».
During these three days, the helmsmen will be João Branco and TFS, who present a varied and inspired musical selection, followed by a powerful dj set by TFS. Tomorrow, Friday, the 26th, it will be the turn of Zé Vieira Quarteto, who will offer a night of jazz in front of the river, with the full moon per partner.
And finally on Saturday, the music will be played by Vasco Fortes, Theodoro and Roundhouse Kick; on a journey to Mars, the red planet.
Admission is free and the association's bar, for such drinks, has discounts for Download members.
