The University of the Algarve announced this Wednesday its "deep grief" for the death of Professor António Rosa Mendes. The professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, researcher of Algarve history and heritage and director of the UAlg Central Library was one of the main faces of the Algarve academy and a prominent figure in the academic world and in society.

Antonio Rosa Mendes passed away this Tuesday at the Hospital of Faro, where he was hospitalized a few weeks ago. The funeral will take place tomorrow, June 6, in Vila Nova de Cacela, where he was from. The funeral vigil will take place in the mortuary of Vila Real de Santo António, from the beginning of this afternoon.

UAlg's note of regret:

It is with deep regret that the University of Algarve announces the death of Professor António Rosa Mendes, yesterday, June 4th.

Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, he taught courses in the History of Culture, History of the Algarve and Cultural Heritage Law. He was Director of the University Library. He coordinated the Master's course in Algarve History and was responsible for the Center for the Study of Heritage and History of the Algarve (CEPHA).

Born in Vila Nova de Cacela, he studied in Faro. Graduated in History and Law. Master and Doctor in History, António Rosa Mendes was an exemplary professor and has contributed a lot, in recent years, to boosting scientific research on the History of the Algarve. In 2005 he was president of “Faro, National Capital of Culture”.

The Rector of the University of Algarve, Professor João Guerreiro, stated “he deeply regrets the disappearance of this researcher and remembers António Rosa Mendes as a character committed to the Algarve region, with a solid personality and an enviable culture, always available for the initiatives that he led to the valorization of knowledge. Cultivating a fine irony, António Rosa Mendes took every opportunity to evoke 'his Algarve'. As a teacher, he certainly leaves his students immensely longing for the way he was enthusiastic about matters related to the History of the Algarve in his classes. What's more, a friend with an elegant manner, an enthusiastic animator of get-togethers and a demanding companion in social struggles is lost”.

The University of Algarve regrets the death of Professor António Rosa Mendes, for which it decrees three days of academic mourning and presents its sincere condolences to the entire Family and Friends.

The funeral vigil will take place at the mortuary of Vila Real de S. António, from the beginning of this afternoon until next Thursday, the 5th, and the last rituals will take place in the church of Cacela, after what the body will be buried in the local cemetery.
