Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be in Loulé on the 20th of June to present a conference on the theme «Reflection on the past and present of Portugal at this crossroads of its history», inserted in the cycle «Horizontes do Futuro», which has been coming to be promoted by the Chamber of Loulé. The initiative will take place at the Salão Nobre of the Paços do Concelho de Loulé.

 

About the speaker:

Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa was born in Lisbon, on December 12, 1948.

Graduated in Law (1971) and Doctor in Legal-Political Sciences (1984), he is a full professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where he served as chairman of the Board of Directors (1985-1989) of the Institute of Legal Cooperation ( 2004-2005), of the Institute of Legal-Political Sciences (since 2005) and of the Pedagogical Council (2006-2010). He was also full professor at the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Portugal, guest full professor at the Faculty of Economics of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, as well as at the Faculty of Human Sciences of the Catholic University of Portugal. He was the negotiator of the draft for the Faculty of Law of the University of Bissau and chaired the Installation Committee of the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto (1995-1996 and 2001-2003). He is an Honoris Causa Doctor from the University of Porto.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa joined the Social Democratic Party after its foundation in 1974. He was president of the Lisbon District Political Commission (1975-1977) and became president of the National Political Commission (1996-1999). Also in the PSD, he led the New Hope Wing (1983-1985) and was one of the promoters of membership of the European People's Party (1996).

He was a deputy to the Constituent Assembly (1975-1976), president of the Cascais Municipal Assembly (1979-1982), member of the VIII Constitutional Government (first as secretary of state for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, then as minister for Parliamentary Affairs), head of list for the Lisbon City Council, elected councilor (1990-1993), president of the Municipal Assembly of Celorico de Basto (1997-2009), member of the European Parliament and vice president of the PPE (1997-1999), member of the Council between 2000 and 2001 and, again, from 2006.

In social communication, he was director of Expresso (1980-1983) and Semanário (1983-1987). He later gained notoriety in political commentary, first on TSF, with Exame (1993-1996), then on television, collaborating on TVI's Jornal Nacional (2000-2004 and again since 2010) and with As Escolhas de Marcelo, on RTP1 (2005-2010).

He was made Commander of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada on June 9, 1994 and received the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique on June 9, 2005.

He is a State Councilor.

In 2012 he was appointed President of the Fundação da Casa de Bragança.
