The General Council of the University of Algarve will elect its president today from among the ten elements outside the academy that the elected members of the governing body of the Algarve university chose.
The new composition of the General Council is marked by co-opted members who are closely linked to the pedagogical and scientific area, as well as business.
The ten personalities from outside UAlg co-opted to the General Council were Luís Magalhães, former president of the Foundation for Science and Technology, Bruto da Costa, former minister and current president of the National Justice and Peace Commission, Algarve businessmen Vítor Neto and Sandra Correia, the director of the Institute of Drugs and Drug Addiction João Goulão, the musicologist Rui Nery, the former president of the CCDR of Algarve Campos Correia and the psychologist and former member of the PSD José Canavarro.
The former president of the Academic Association Pedro Meireles and the professor at the University of Huelva Alfonso Vargas are the only two personalities who transition from the old to the new General Council.
“There are people here linked to education and others to companies. Basically, that was the intention, to create here a set of competences, some more focused on companies, others more focused on education», summarized the interim president of the body Ludgero Sequeira to Sul Informação.
"It is clear that this list came from a list of 21 proposals, unless there is an error", he stressed.
“This new General Council has a greater regional component, without a doubt. Somehow, I think the composition is more balanced. Now, it is true that in the previous one there would have been more resounding names, but, based on the experience we had in the past, I believe that the people chosen now can have a very good contribution to the development of the University of Algarve», he considered.
Today, the future president of the body will be elected, a name that will have to be chosen from among the ten external personalities chosen.
According to Ludgero Sequeira, it is difficult to predict which name the council will lean towards, but he elects Luís Magalhães and Bruto da Costa, due to their curriculum and experience, as the most likely candidates. "But I am sure that any one of the ten co-opted elements will do a good job, if elected," he stressed.
At the meeting that is already under way, a date for the election of the Rector, one of the competences of the General Council, has not yet been set. "Today we will address the issue of regulation, which should not raise major issues," he said.
As for a date, it is already known that the election will take place "in October or November" and the marking of the day should be the central issue in one of the next meetings of the UAlg body, which will be scheduled today.
