The Municipality of Lagos «had nothing to do with the actions of the police and economic and food security forces that decided to carry out an inspection in the well-known Feira das Velharias of Barão de S. João». The intervention, according to the autarchy, will have resulted, "as far as we were informed, of several complaints and suspicions presented to the referred authorities".

The Câmara de Lagos comments thus, at the request of the Sul Informação, the statement released this week by the MPT/Lagos, making the municipality responsible for «the end of the Barão de São João fair».

The MPT/Lagos even considers that «the recent large operation carried out by the authorities, resulting in thousands of euros in fines and which brought about the end of the Barão de São João fair, was a consequence of the municipality's continued negligence situation. about this rural parish».

«It is not clear how, for privileged areas of the city, there is money for commemorative fairs and conditions are created for the sale of junk in the parking lot of the sports complex, while in the most remote location of the county, seat of the rural parish whose extinction is approaching, the City Council did not have any response that would prevent the end of the oldest and most popular flea market in the municipality», said Paulo Rosário Dias, responsible for the local structure of the MPT.

MPT/Lagos accuses the Chamber, led by socialist Júlio Barroso, of "neglecting economic misuse of the council's potential" and argues that "community activities of this nature such as fairs and markets, street sales and antique and antique fairs can e they must be valued, providing them with conditions, a better legal framework and urban planning, as well as increasing tourist and promotional value».

“We cannot guarantee a new fairground as other parties promised in the last election campaigns and did nothing to achieve it, what we can say is that the lack of resources does not justify the lack of action and there is even a lot of work that can be produced without increasing the expense», added Paulo Rosário Dias.

Responding to the accusations, the City of Lagos emphasizes that "this well-known fair had a local popular origin, it was never organized by the City Council, nor did it ever have any kind of licensing and supervision by the municipality".

The Chamber even adds that, with the collaboration of the police forces and the Parish Councils, it is “promoting the necessary studies with a view to verifying the conditions in which this type of events can be held, in strict compliance with all laws and regulations applicable, to safeguard vehicle traffic, the safety of people and goods and respect for the rules of economic activity imposed by law, namely by Law No. 27/2013 of 12 April».

For this purpose, the City Council hopes “to be able to count on the collaboration of both vendors and regulars of this type of popular and commercial events”.
