Portuguese Luísa Condeço won the silver medal in the Junior Europe Cup, in the international leg of the XII Triathlon Prof. Carlos Gravata City of Quarteira, which took place this weekend, in that Algarvean location.

At the start of another cycle, with a view to participating in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, the Spaniards were among the favorites to win in Quarteira, and so it was.

In the European Cup, Fernando Alarza (1st place) and Vicente Hernandez (3rd place) took the podium, along with Frenchman Aurelien Raphael, second to reach the goal.

In this competition marked by the participants from Spain, the Portuguese team managed to place five athletes in the top 20 – Filipe Azevedo (11th), Vasco Pessoa (12th), Rafael Ribeiro (13th), Bruno Pais (14th) and Pedro Mendes (19th) -, having all of them scored for the world rankings.

In the women's sector, the British Non Ford, current World Triathlon Champion Under-23, achieved the victory in the Algarve race, leaving behind the German Rebecca Robisch and the South African Gillian Sanders. Absent from this competition were the Portuguese athletes.

The great Portuguese achievement was in the European Junior Women's Cup, in which the young Luísa Condeço got the 2nd place, right behind the winner of the competition, the Slovak Ivana Kuriackova. Spaniard Laura Gomez Ramon joined the podium after having passed the line in third position.

In the men's sector, the Portuguese Francisco Machado also got a 5th place, cutting the goal 34 seconds from the winner, the French Raphael Montoyo, who, in a tight final dispute, was better against the more direct opponent, the Dutch Jorik Van Egdom.

Constantine Doherty (Republic of Ireland) took bronze in this event that was one of the most disputed of the weekend.

At the end of this event, on Sunday, the competition was held for the National Club Championship in which “Os Águias” from Alpiarça were the best team, both in Men's and Women's Elites. In both sectors, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Alhandra Sporting Club won silver and bronze, respectively.

In individual terms, the highlight went to Sportinguista Liliana Alexandre and Ricardo Jorge (“Os Águias” from Alpiarça), the first to cross the finish line in their respective sectors, also conquering absolute career victories.

According to the organization, once again the XII Triathlon in Quarteira proved to be at the level of the best world competitions in the sport.

The good weather conditions that were felt during the weekend also contributed to the important participation of the public and, consequently, to the dynamism of the local economy, especially in terms of restaurants.
