The monitoring committee of the Mobility and Transport Plan of Olhão (PMTO) met again last week, in the Municipal Library Auditorium, to present Phase 3 of the Plan – Formulation of Proposals, carried out by TIS, the company responsible for the development of the study.

Fátima Santos and Vasco Colaço, from the company TIS, responsible for preparing the plan, highlighted some of the strategic objectives of the PMTO, such as promoting the quality of life for residents, workers and visitors, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable economy, promoting sustainable mobility supported by public transport networks and soft modes, promoting accessibility, social inclusion and social justice, increasing the safety of all users and contributing to reducing the environmental impacts associated with the transport sector.

From the large number of proposals presented in the study, which aim to improve mobility in the municipality of Olhão, TIS technicians highlighted the improvement of safety conditions in the crossings of Av. Dom João VI, proposing the organization and definition of a protection system for crossings pedestrian crossings (some through traffic lights) or the creation of pedibus circuits with the aim of promoting pedestrian movements on the home-school routes, thus promoting 'walking' among the youngest.

Of the various proposals for the cycling network, we highlight the creation of an inter-school network in the city of Olhão, with comfort and safety conditions for the use of bicycles in proximity trips, the creation of cycle routes between the main schools of the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and secondary school.

With regard to public transport, it is proposed the improvement of the main inter-municipal and inter-parish connections and the redefinition of the urban circuit of Olhão, as well as the study of the revision of the collective transport tariff.

The proposals also imply the improvement of road connections between Moncarapacho and Faro, the relocation of the Olhão bus terminal and, in order to reduce traffic volumes and circulation speed within the conurbations, it is proposed to contain the crossing movements on Av. Dom João VI and to improve the crossing links to Olhão.

With regard to parking, it is proposed to create a parking pool to support the railway station in Olhão and reorganize the parking lot in the Fuseta riverside area, as well as the expansion of paid parking in some areas of the Cubist city.

In total, the proposals developed in this phase of the Plan, which will continue to be discussed and improved, correspond to a total investment, for a period of 10 years, of around 2,6 million euros and annual maintenance costs of around 241 thousand euros.

With the delivery of the final proposal for this plan, a workshop will be held open to the population, the date of which will be announced shortly.
