The municipal roads of Olhão could be closed to heavy traffic, if the Government is not available to find a viable alternative to Via do Infante in that county, threatened this Saturday the mayor of Olhão Francisco Leal.

On April 27, the mayors of the City Council and of the Municipal Assembly of Olhão joined the protests against tolls on Via do Infante and took the opportunity to send a message to the Government.

At issue is the cancellation of the Olhão bypass to the EN 125, after the decision to charge fees on the A22 and the consequences it had for the quality of life of the people of Olhão.

"I hope to be able to put the measure into effect within two months, as the situation is getting worse by the day," said the mayor. Exceptions will only be made for heavy vehicles that have to load or unload within the city.

On the other hand, heavy transit traffic that wants to use national roads «will have to exit in Tavira or in Faro to go to Tavira or Faro», in this case, using roads that cross the interior of the region.

«I joined this protest because I do not agree with the tolls on Via do Infante. As you can see, this only aggravated the situation on the EN125. This was already considered the road of death and, with all the traffic that has been coming to this area, it is practically impassable", said the mayor, in front of the Ria Shopping, an area that is roughly halfway along the 125 section which is now under management municipal.

“When we get to summer it will be very difficult. Here in Olhão, the situation is extremely serious, as the greater the traffic diverted from the Via do Infante, the greater the atmospheric pollution and noise within the city. The lives of the people who live here have become hell”, he illustrated.

Reasons that are considered sufficient to «interdict heavy traffic on this section of the EN 125 that belongs to the City Council», as well as on other municipal roads.

"Even because I already asked the Secretary of State for Transport for a meeting six months ago and he still hasn't had the opportunity to hear me," he added.

When and if he manages to speak with the member of Government, Francisco Leal says he will make him try to understand that «the Variant to Olhão is very important, especially when there are tolls to be collected». “We can't go on like this. The government doesn't take measures, doesn't care about the Algarve and the Algarve», he accused.
