The mayors of Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte (Spain) agreed, this Monday, to proceed with the constitution of a cross-border association of businessmen, common to the territory of the two municipalities.

The proposal was put forward during the monthly coordination meeting of the Eurocity Ayamonte – Vila Real de Santo António, in the week that marks three months since the foundation of this new structure of international cooperation.

According to the Mayor of VRSA Luís Gomes, “the project will now be presented to the authorities of both countries and will have a particular impact on the areas of tourism, commerce and industry, allowing businessmen to jointly promote their activities.

The creation of the association responds to a pretension of Portuguese and Andalusian businessmen, expressed during a sectorial meeting in February, with the mayor of the Ayuntamiento (municipality) and Ayamonte, Antonio J. Rodríguez Castillo, classifying the measure as “an advance in Iberian citizenship ».

At Monday's meeting, the launch of the Eurocitizen Card was also evaluated, a document that will give access to the uniform use of collective facilities in the two cities (sports and cultural spaces, among others).

To continue the cooperation policies, the two municipalities are planning to organize an intergenerational meeting, a measure that has already received the support of the Councilor for the Presidency and Equality of the Andalusian Council, Susana Díaz,

In the list of priorities, it was also agreed to proceed with the creation of the Eurocity headquarters and to advance in matters related to mobility, education and health.
