Nine tons of garbage were removed from the Ria Formosa over the five days of the “Clean up the Ria Formosa” initiative, promoted by the City Council. Faro with the help of more than 50 entities and 750 volunteers.

The action allowed to relieve this lagoon system of different types of debris, namely "plastics, glass and monos", according to the municipality of Faro.

In addition to improving the environmental quality of Ria Formosa, this initiative is part of the environmental education activities of the Blue Flag program in the municipality of Faro, also wanted to sensitize the population to "the importance of preserving natural resources" in the lagoon system.

Something that also seems to have been achieved, given the participation of volunteers.

In 2013, the initiative had two distinct moments. On April 16, 17, 18 and 19, cleaning actions were focused on Ilha da Culatra, Praia de Faro and Ilha Deserta (2 days) and were intended solely for students from EB 1 schools in the municipality, who donated 300 volunteers to the campaign.

On April 20, the cleaning actions took place at Praia de Faro, Barrinha and Ilhotes; Island of Culatra and Island of Farole are intended for the entire population.

On this day, 450 people were mobilized “from youth associations, local companies, public entities and the population in general”.
