Macário Correia should not re-apply for Faro and the PSD candidate for the presidency of the municipality of Faro will be presented on March 24th.
The decision was taken by the mayor and transmitted to the National Political Commission of the PSD this Wednesday, according to the newspaper «Público» in its online edition.
A question that the mayor, contacted by Sul Informação, "does not confirm or deny", arguing that "does not comment on news in newspapers".
Macário Correia said that his position on the matter is known and he does not want to make any additional statements on the matter, including the possible decision not to re-apply.
The information conveyed by «Público» was advanced to the media by the coordinator and first vice-president of the National Political Commission of the PSD, Jorge Moreira da Silva, in a press release. In this note, the social democrat announced that Macário Correia will not re-candidate and that the municipal and district structures will propose a new candidate for the presidency of the Chamber of Faro until March 24st.
«At a meeting held today, in Lisbon, at the initiative of the National Political Commission, with the District Policy Commission and with the Political Commission of the Section of Faro, the engineer Macário Correia informed us of his decision, given the fact that his judicial process has not yet been concluded and that he does not want to prejudice the PSD's electoral calendar and strategy, and in these circumstances he does not re-apply for the presidency of the Municipal Council of Faro», according to the document signed by Jorge Moreira da Silva.
The decision was announced a day after the mayor had come to the public notice that the Constitutional Court had refused for the third time to consider his appeal. In a press release, Macário Correia said that he would remain in office and appeal again against the sentence for loss of office in the Supreme Administrative Court.
The Political Commission of the PSD also recalled that it had already communicated that «the desirable re-candidacy of engineer Macário Correia to the City Council of Faro, given the important services provided to the community, it was dependent on the full and timely clarification (that is, until March 31, 2013 – deadline for national approval of all candidates) of the process concerning the possible loss of their municipal mandate».
