The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, this Wednesday made a positive assessment of the Algarve Cup, which ended yesterday with the victory of the United States, in a game played at the Algarve Stadium, considering that it fulfilled the objective of promoting national women's football, in a tournament with the best teams in the world.

“We are fortunate to have the best teams in the world in this tournament. We fulfilled our objective of promoting women's football, we had an exceptional media coverage for this event”, said Fernando Gomes, after the final of the Algarve Cup, won by the United States team.

For the federative leader, there is still a "long way to go" to reach the "elevation levels" in terms of "ranking" and increase the number of practitioners.

“I hope this tournament serves to make us aware of what we have to evolve. We know we have a lot to work with. We have already started working with the younger teams, such as the under-16 and under-19 teams”, he stressed.

Fernando Gomes says that the creation of the youngest women's soccer teams is a halfway for appearing more practitioners, therefore being "aware and confident" that "greater quality to raise women's soccer to the level" they would like will emerge.

Angel Villar, president of Real Federacion Espanhola, FIFA vice-president and president of the FIFA Referees Committee, was also present at the final of the Algarve Cup, in which he stated that this is a “very important” tournament as they are present at “ the best teams in the world”.

Villar also said that he spoke with his Portuguese counterpart about various issues that affect Iberian football, and the relations of the Portuguese and Spanish federations with the rest of European and world football.

“I took the opportunity to talk about several themes that affect Spanish and Portuguese football. We had to talk about football in general, the situation of Portuguese and Spanish football and the relations of our federations with the rest of European and world football”, he stressed.

Angel Villar also classified the referees who were in the Algarve as “the best in the whole world”.

Yesterday, the United States won the Women's Mundialito for the ninth time, by defeating Germany in the final, by 2-0, in a match played at Estádio Algarve, while the Portuguese team won the 11th place by beating Wales ( 3-1, 1-1 at the end of regular time).
