Six special units of the GNR to support tourists of foreign nationality, the use of intelligent technology by the PSP to fight crime and a seasonal reinforcement of the control of maritime, land and air borders, by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) were some of the news that the security forces presented at a meeting that brought together police forces, businessmen and decision-makers from the region with members of the Government, in Faro.

The meeting, which journalists were not able to attend, served to prepare the summer security reinforcement. A few hours after the end of the meeting, the Regional Tourism Authority of the Algarve, whose headquarters hosted the meeting, announced in a press release that some new developments for the coming high season were announced.

«Among the news presented by the National Republican Guard (GNR) command for the summer of 2013 are six «Tourist Support Patrol» (TSP) units created to support tourists in the busiest areas of the destination. All TSP soldiers have knowledge of foreign languages», revealed Turismo do Algarve.

«The «Algarve – safe destination» project of the Public Security Police (PSP) will be another of the novelties to be presented in April by the national direction of this security force. It is the application to tourism of a security model just-in-time based on intelligent technology, such as video surveillance, which has now gained a new legal framework», added ERTA.

As regards the strengthening of border controls, it will be felt “especially in the months of July and August”.

These news precede the announcement of the means that will be deployed to the Algarve in the usual summer booster. Minister of Internal Administration Miguel Macedo, who attended the meeting in Faro, promised news for "two or three weeks from now".
