After the queues and protests yesterday by tourists trying to pay and understand the electronic tolls on the Portuguese-Spanish border in the Algarve, this Saturday around two dozen protesters against the tolls found a much calmer situation at the Guadiana International Bridge.

Although the bulk of tourists, mainly Spanish, entered Portugal during the day yesterday, Maundy Thursday, it is only today that Estradas de Portugal has placed employees in the toll booths on the Guadiana bridge to assist the visitors. foreign travelers.

José Domingos, from the Commission of Users of Via do Infante (CUVI), said that these employees were using electronic tolls «today because yesterday we denounced this situation. If not, nobody was here».

The problem, he explained, “is that people are not used to it, they make the mistake of taking the titles. They want to go out at the Altura or Castro Marim node and end up taking it to Tavira or Olhão, some even take the ticket for several days», ending up paying what they don't spend.

Yesterday, long lines of foreign tourists caused chaos at the entrance to Portugal due to doubts about the payment of electronic tolls. There were even those who accused the system of being “Third Worldists” and witnesses guarantee that some visitors ended up turning around and returning to Spain.

In today's protest action at that border, promoted by the Commission of Users of Via do Infante, there were almost as many demonstrators as agents of the Highway Authority (GNR).

The incoming movement of foreign motorists was much calmer and, thanks also to the employees of Estradas de Portugal, no queues were formed.
