The Chamber of Castro Marim will issue dozens of Cards for the Elderly and renew many others, with the aim of supporting families in the municipality that have more delicate socio-economic situations, announced the municipality.

This concrete measure is oriented towards the senior population, namely towards the “elderly people who live in a state of need due to issues related to old age and fragile health”.

«Since June 2011, the City Council has issued more than two hundred Elderly Cards, thus contributing to the improvement of living conditions and comfort for many people from Castro,» revealed the municipality, in a press release.

The beneficiaries of the Elderly Card benefit from the Municipality's contribution of 50% in the purchase of medicines in the county's pharmacies, the 50% reduction in the payment of fees and other taxes due for the services provided by the Municipality and also in the reduction of 50 percent relative to the water supply rate, when household consumption does not exceed 10 cubic meters.

«The creation of the Elderly Card is part of a vast set of social policies that the Municipality of Castro Marim is developing, which aim to provide quality of life and well-being to disadvantaged families in the municipality, who are experiencing situations of great economic weakness, they need the help and solidarity of the municipal executive», framed the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The local authority gives as an example «the restoration and qualification of housing for the elderly, transport to doctor's appointments, the public transport network “Castro Marim Mais Perto”, the “Castro Marim Amigo”, the Bibliomóvel (itinerant library), subsidies to encourage births and the award of scholarships».
