After being in the news the closing of Castello-Lopes movie theaters in Portimão and Guia, moviegoers from the Barlavento Algarve will now be able to get the belly out of miseries. This is because, next Friday, February 15th, the regular exhibition of independent cinema will begin at the Municipal Theater of Portimão, while in the neighboring municipality of Lagoa, at the Municipal Auditorium, it will be time for more commercial but quality films.

So, on the 15th, at 21 pm, the film “Tabu” by Miguel Gomes will be screened at the Small Auditorium of TEMPO, thus starting the “Cinema at 30ths”, a regular schedule of independent films that, twice a month and always on Fridays, it will bring to the Municipal Theater of Portimão works of the 6th art by directors from all over the world.

Lagoa will also have regular monthly movie sessions on Fridays, while maintaining two monthly films for children of all ages and films for senior viewers. The program starts next Friday, with the film «Os Descendentes» and will present «Lincoln», on the 7th of June.

The screening of the films will take place at the Municipal Auditorium of Lagoa, in an initiative of the local Council, due to the fact that «the city and the municipality do not have private cinemas».

Thus, in addition to the usual monthly sessions of “Cinema de Palmo e Meio”, with the projection of two films, at different times, for children of all ages, there will now be regular monthly sessions “on Friday” (Adults , Clube de Cinema), seeking to fill existing gaps in terms of cinematographic exhibition.

With educational and cultural objectives, the Cultural Services of the Municipality intend to «create and broaden the taste for the seventh art, also as a form of entertainment and occupation of free time». The Câmara de Lagoa informs that it will try to show high quality films, available on the commercial circuit.

Thus, the “Friday” movie schedule, always at 21 pm, starts next week, on February 15, with “Os Descendentes”, followed by “Comprámos um Zoo” (March 15), « Pi's Life" (April 26), "Risk Throw" (May 24), "Lincoln" (June 7), "Argo" (September 20), "Life Tours" (October 11) ) and “Love” (November 29).

With regard to the program “Cinema Numa Noite de Verão” (22 hours), the outdoor film “The Age of Rock” will be screened on August 10, in Ferragudo, and on August 11, in Carvoeiro .

In October, on days, places and time to be defined, there will also be a Cinema for Senior Spectators.

As for the program “Cinema de Palmo e Meio”, aimed at children, at the Auditório Municipal de Lagoa, with sessions at 15 pm, on February 00th, “As Aventuras de Sammy” will be screened, continuing afterwards with “Zambézia” (April 24) , "Alpha and Omega" (May 28), "Hotel Transylvania" (June 26), "The Croods" (September 30), "Little Red Riding Hood - The New Adventure" (October 29), "EPIC" ( November 27) and "Justin" (December 24).

 

 

«Tabu» opens programming in Portimão

 

“Tabu”, the film that opens on February 15th at the Municipal Theater of Portimão, won the Critics Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2012, and continues to garner distinctions all over the world.

It was recently chosen as the second best film of the year in the top ten promoted by the British magazine Sight & Sound, published by the British Film Institut, and elected by the French magazine Cahiers du Cinema as one of the best movies of the year.

In March, there are two feature films that have also garnered critical acclaim: the documentary “Women are heroes” by French street photographer and artist JR, winner of the 2011 TED Prize, which will be screened on 8 at 21 pm, date which celebrates International Women's Day.

It will then be the turn of “A better life”, by the French Cédric Kahn, which won Guillaume Canet the Best Actor Award at the Rome Film Festival and which also won the Special Jury Award and Cineuropa Award at the Lisbon and Estoril Film Festival , to be presented on the 15th of March, also at 21 pm.

This is followed by “Cosmopolis”, by acclaimed Canadian director David Cronenberg, produced by the Portuguese Paulo Branco, on April 12, and the political thriller about the operation that led to the murder of Humberto Delgado by PIDE “Operation Autumn” by Bruno de Almeida , on the 26th of the same month.

On May 19, it will be the turn of the controversial and award-winning film by Leo Carax “Holy Motors”, which won the Best Film and Best Director Award in the fantastic competition of the Sitges Festival 2012, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2012 and was chosen as the fourth best film of the year in the aforementioned Sight & Sound magazine's top ten.

This is followed by “Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu”, by the Romanian Andrei Ujica, winner of Best Edition of the 2011 Gopos Awards, to be shown on May 24th.

June brings “Elena” by the Russian Andrey Zvyagintsev, winner of the Special Prize of the Jury of the Cannes Film Festival 2011, on the 14th, and on the 28th it is the turn of “The Police” by the Israeli Nadav Lapid, winner of the Special Jury Prize of the Locarno Film Festival, for Best First Film, Best Screenplay and Best Photography at the Jerusalem Film Festival, and Audience Award at the Nantes Film Festival.

On July 12th, TEMPO screens “Ali, the hunter” by Iranian director Rafi Pitts, nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, while on the 26th, and closing the season before the summer, it's the turn of “O meu mais amigo” by Japanese Hirokazu Koreeda, who won the Best Screenplay Award at the San Sebastián Festival.
