The Algarve and Madeira recorded, in the 4th quarter of 2012, the highest unemployment rates, with 19,7%, almost 3 percentage points above the national average (16,9%), indicate the data released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Among the regions with the highest unemployment rates are Lisbon (18,7%), Norte (17,8%) and Alentejo (17,2%).

On the contrary, the lowest values ​​were observed in the Center (12,7%) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (16,2%).

Compared to the same quarter of 2011, similarly to what happened globally for Portugal, the unemployment rate increased in all regions. The largest increases occurred in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (6,2 pp), in Alentejo (4,1 pp), in Lisbon (4,0 pp) and in the North (3,7 pp).

Compared to the previous quarter, the unemployment rate also increased in all regions. The largest increases occurred in the Algarve (5,0 pp), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (2,2 pp) and in the North (1,4 pp).

In 2012, the highest unemployment rates were registered in the Algarve (17,9%), in Lisbon (17,6%), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (17,5%), in the North (16,1%) and in Alentejo (15,9%).

The lowest values ​​were observed in the Center (12,0%) and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (15,3%).

Compared to the previous year, the unemployment rate increased in all regions. The largest increases occurred in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (3,8 pp), the Autonomous Region of Madeira (3,7 pp), the Alentejo (3,5 pp), Lisbon (3,5 pp) and the North (3,1 .XNUMX pp).

Data from INE also indicate that the estimated unemployment rate for the 4th quarter of 2012, at national level, was 16,9%. This figure is 2,9 percentage points higher than the same quarter of 2011 and 1,1 percentage points higher than the previous quarter.

The unemployed population was almost one million people (923,2 thousand), which represents a year-on-year increase of 19,7% and a quarterly increase of 6,0% (more 152,2 thousand and 52,3 thousand people, respectively) .

The employed population was 4 thousand people, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 531,8% and a quarterly decrease of 4,3% (less 2,7 thousand and 203,6 thousand people, respectively).

The average annual unemployment rate in 2012 was 15,7%, which represents an increase of 2,9 percentage points over the previous year.

The unemployed population was 860,1 thousand people, having increased 21,8% compared to the previous year (more 154,0 thousand people). The employed population registered an annual decrease of 4,2% (202,3 thousand people less).
