The mayor of Albufeira has already expressed his concern about the Castello-Lopes cinemas close in Algarve Shopping, in Guia, news that the Sul Informação gave first hand yesterday.

José Carlos Rolo lamented the creation of "another difficult social situation", due to the redundancies that the closing of the nine movie theaters in that shopping center entails.

In the country, the closing of cinemas represents 75 redundancies, while in the Algarve, Portimão and Guia, the situation involves close to a dozen workers, made redundant or whose contracts will not be renewed.

The exhibitor Socorama Castello-Lopes announced yesterday the closing, starting tomorrow, Thursday, of 49 movie theaters across the country, in commercial spaces managed by the Sonae Sierra group.

In the Algarve, in addition to Guia, which closes tomorrow, since January 2nd, the six rooms of the Continente Shopping Center in Portimão are also closed. like the Sul Informação yesterday reported.

Sonae Sierra, in a statement that our newspaper had access to, said that «Castello Lopes has accumulated a very high debt [to the commercial spaces where the theaters are located] and has not met other conditions necessary for the operation of the cinemas to be viable» .
