The Bay of Artisanal Fisheries Fishermen's Association Monte Gordo received, this Monday, a new tractor. The acquisition is intended to revitalize the fishing activity of Monte Gordo, a sector that employs almost two hundred workers.

The equipment was acquired following an application by the association to the Mainland Fisheries Operational Program (Promar), within the scope of the support measure for fishing ports, landing sites and shelter, which had the logistical support of the Division of Economic Activities of the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.

The application also involves the acquisition of a front loader and a beach cleaning machine, equipment that will ensure the maintenance of the seafront adjacent to the storage area and fishing warehouses.

The delivery of the tractor took place on the beach of Monte Gordo and was attended by the mayor of Vila Real, Luís Gomes, the president of the Associação de Pescadores da Pesca Artesanal da Baía de Monte Gordo, Adriano Rosa, and members of the local fishing community.

The total value of the investment amounts to 78.291,18 euros. The contribution to the Promar operational program is 80%, thus the promoter's participation is 15.658,24 euros.

The tractor delivered this Monday is part of the set of improvements that the association will carry out in the coming months, with the support of the Vila-Realense municipality.

Also on the calendar is the refurbishment of the auction building – whose work will begin shortly – which will house the headquarters of the Associação de Pescadores da Pesca Artesanal da Baía de Monte Gordo.

For the mayor of Vila Real de Santo António Luís Gomes, the collaboration of the municipality in this application process «is an example of the partnership work that must be done between municipalities and associations, a measure that makes even more sense in a time of financial adjustment ».

«This type of partnership is, in fact, one of the actions foreseen in the Employment Plan of Vila Real de Santo António, launched in July 2012. In this case, the acquisition of the tractor will help to boost the fishing sector, one of the main economic activities in Monte Gordo which employs around 200 people», concludes the mayor.

Also in October 2012, the fishing community at Manta Rota beach (Lota) benefited from a new tractor, a wooden support house, an ice machine and a cold room. The equipment was also acquired following an application to Promar, promoted by the VRSA municipality.
