António Lacerda, professor at the School of Education and Communication (ESEC) of the University of Algarve, took over as president of the National Association of Designers (AND), a position he will occupy for the next two years.

PhD in Design from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (FA-UTL) and professor since 2006 of the Communication Design Course at UAlg, it is thanks to his professional, academic and entrepreneurial capacity that he assumes the position of president of this association.

Of the eighteen objectives proposed by the list headed by António Lacerda, we highlight the annual holding of a National Design Meeting; the design and implementation of a new visual identity for DNA and a digital communication platform; the integration of DNA into International Design Support Communities; and scheduling meetings with political parties with parliamentary seats, the Minister of Education and Science and the Course Accreditation Agency (A3ES), with a view to regulating the activity, defending the relevance of the profession and the debate on the quantity, nature and quality of Design courses given in Portugal. The relocation of the headquarters to the Algarve, the establishment of partnerships and protocols with public and private institutions and a greater focus on communication, in general, and on social networks, in particular, are also other goals that this new team intends to achieve.

About the National Association of Designers

It was in 1975 that higher education in Design appeared in Portugal, thanks to the opening in public education of the course at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL).

Over the next twenty-eight years, about ten thousand professionals completed their degrees in different Design education institutions, so it became urgent to create an association to defend the interests in question and to analyze and debate, in detail, the constraints, ethics and deontological conduct of the profession.

And this is because, in addition to being a new and legally unprotected activity, the relevance that it could have in the political, social and economic spheres, if properly promoted and regulated, was foreseen.

Thus, the constitution of the DNA ended up happening in 2003, intending not only to protect Design professionals and achieve recognition and institutionalization of the profession, but also to defend/guide these professionals, in public or private institutions, within the scope of applicable legislation. .
