The idea of a group of friends to organize a São Silvestre Race between the Calçadão de Quarteira and the Marina de Vilamoura materialized and brought together 120 people on the night of December 27th.

According to Lénia Gamito, one of the organizers of the race, which took place for the first time last year, and brought together 70 runners, it was «to gather friends and friends of friends, for a non-competitive end-of-the-year race, which was just a get-together between people who like to run».

To achieve this goal, an event was created on Facebook and, in 2012, registrations had to be limited. “This year, over 120 people, from 5 to 80 years of age, have attended, involving entire families. It was no longer because the entries on Facebook had to be blocked, fearing that several hundred would appear, because despite the desire to see the Quarteira promenade overflowing with participants, we felt that we were unable to receive so many people».

At the end of the race – which had two distances 5 and 10 km, for Lénia Gamito, “the balance was ultra-positive. In the end, it was a great gathering of friends around running and walking, a sharing of experiences, in which each one went to surpass themselves individually and be among friends. In the end, the majority expressed a desire to us: that we would all be together again at the end of 2013».
