The Municipality of Tavira disagrees with the changes to the system of school organization of primary and secondary education in the municipality, proposed by the Regional Directorate of Education of the Algarve (DREAlg), defending «the maintenance of the current model until the recent changes».

However, despite the "solidarity and sustained" opposition of the local educational community represented in the General Councils of the D. Manuel I, D. Paio Peres Correia and Tavira Secondary Schools, the Government decided to "unilaterally" bring these two schools together. .

In view of this unilateral decision, the Municipality of Tavira regrets "that the dialogue between all the entities involved has this result and condemns this anti-pedagogical attitude, which only seems to be based on economicist perspectives", since, "in terms of the number of students, distribution geographical proximity of the schools, geographical proximity of them, conditions of the facilities of the Secondary School of Tavira and others in operational terms of operation, namely in terms of management of non-teaching staff, this reality of Tavira does not guarantee a good curricular articulation between educational levels and cycles and the construction of coherent and integrated school pathways».

The Mayor of Tavira had already reaffirmed, together with the Regional Directorate of Education of the Algarve, the position made public in May 2012, opposing the aggregation of the Secondary School of Tavira Dr. Jorge Correia and the Basic School D Paio Peres Correia.

Having participated in all the meetings of the General Councils of the D. Manuel I, D. Paio Peres Correia and Secondary School of Tavira Groupings, Mayor Jorge Botelho reiterated the position adopted in the matter of Aggregation of Schools and Groupings, fully clarifying the your options.

«The Municipality of Tavira defends that the solution that currently exists in the municipality is the one that best suits the quality of teaching and the educational process itself», said Jorge Botelho, adding that «there is an adequate distribution of students among the different schools. in reality, it promotes quality and leads to balances of management and proximity at different levels across the educational territory, and therefore it expresses its disagreement with the change in the existing school organization system, and the model that currently exists should be maintained».

Given the scenarios presented by DREAlg, the Tavirense Chamber reinforced, on December 20, the position taken over the past three years, as it considers that "none of the proposed hypotheses solves the panoply of cumulative criteria that should guide an effective reorganization of the groups and efficient to the specificities of the Municipality of Tavira».

"There is also the observation of the existence of disturbance/instability that is felt in schools, which continually reaffirm the existing model as the most appropriate", the Mayor of the Municipality opportunely maintained.

However, despite the opposition, the Government moved forward with the aggregation of those two schools, a situation that the municipality now regrets.
