There were more accidents on the Algarve's roads and more injuries to mourn during Operation Natal, but there were no more casualties than during this festive season in 2011, ie one death each year, despite the operation lasting two more days than usual.

This was the first phase of the operation set up by the GNR to promote Road Safety on Portuguese roads, during the festive seasons of Christmas and New Year and lasted from December 21st to 26th.

The New Year operation has also been on the ground since yesterday and will last until January 1st, at midnight.

In 2012, the traditional Road Safety operation launched by the authorities lasted six days, as Christmas was preceded by a weekend instead of the usual four. The same happens with the one that is currently underway.

In the data provided to the Sul Informação by the Command of Faro of the GNR, the increase in the number of accidents stands out, which were 71 in the area of influence of this command, which were considerably higher than in 2011.

In addition to the fatal victim, there were three serious injuries and 12 light injuries to mourn, when in 2011 there were one serious injury and nine light injuries.

1770 soldiers from the National Transit Unit and territorial commands participate in these operations, reinforced with troops from the Security and State Honors Unit and the Intervention Unit, with a daily average of 800 actions.

GNR agents will pay particular attention to driving under the influence of alcohol, speed control and non-use of seat belts and child restraint systems, as well as the use of mobile phones while driving, the main causes of accidents and of more serious consequences in its follow-up.
