Filipa Braz da Silva will be the next president of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve (AAUAlg), becoming the first woman to hold the position. The Pharmaceutical Sciences Integrated Masters student won Filipe da Silva at the ballot boxes by a very wide margin, guaranteeing 77,4 percent of the votes, against 18,8 percent for her opponent.

The result was determined today, at dawn, after just one day of voting. Participation was significant, compared to other years, with more than 2300 students participating, among the almost 9 enrolled at the Algarve university. Last year around 1400 students voted, but there was only one list to vote for the General Direction.

AAUAlg now has two women at the head of the two main bodies of the association. Rita Correia headed the only candidate list for the Board of the General Assembly and was confirmed as the next holder of the position. Both belong to the current general direction.

The vote took place a few days after the results of the audit carried out on the academic association's accounts were released. The timing for the release of the results of this analysis was, at the time, justified by the still president of AAUAlg Pedro Barros with the difficulty in paying for the commissioned study, given the financial difficulties that the entity is going through.

The audit identified a Current Liabilities, that is, a total of around 876 thousand euros at the end of 2011, currently at around 700 thousand euros, which the next General Management will inherit. Continuity, in this case, should also mean the continuation of the association's financial restructuring, one of the commitments assumed by the winner of list A in its manifesto.

The main banner on the list led by Filipa Braz da Silva was pedagogy, with the future leaders of AAUAlg assuming that, despite being one of the main SMEs in the Algarve, with 40 employees, their main responsibility is to the students, its associates.
