The European Commission has proposed to Member States the creation of a “Youth Guarantee”, a new package of measures to ensure that all young people up to the age of 25 receive, within four months of leaving school or becoming unemployed. , an offer of quality employment, continuation of studies, apprenticeship contracts or a professional internship.

To implement the necessary quality and pedagogical support mechanisms, the Commission will support Member States through EU funding, promoting exchanges of good practice between Member States and awareness-raising actions.


Issues

Portugal currently has a youth unemployment rate above 30%, but it is not unique in the European Union.

Italy, Ireland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary and Slovakia are in the same situation as Portugal, while Greece and Spain register rates above 55%.
