Synopsis:

«On September 27, 1810, the French troops commanded by Marshal Massena, are defeated in Serra do Buçaco by the Anglo-Portuguese army of General Wellington.

Despite the victory, the Portuguese and English retreated to forced marches in front of the numerically superior enemy, with the aim of attracting him to Torres Vedras, where Wellington made the construction of fortified lines that were difficult to cross.

Simultaneously, the Anglo-Portuguese command organizes the evacuation of the entire territory between the battlefield and the Torres Vedras lines, in a gigantic scorched earth operation, which deprives the French of any possibility of local supply.

This is the backdrop for the adventures of a host of characters from all walks of life – soldiers and civilians; men, women and children; young and old -, torn from their daily routine by war and thrown over hills and valleys, among ruined villages, charred forests, devastated cultures.

Persecuted fiercely by the French, tormented by an inclement climate, the mass of outlaws continues to advance, gritting their teeth, simply to save their skin, or with the tenacious will to resist the invaders and drive them out of the country, or even in the hope of taking them out. party from the reigning disorder to satisfy the lowest instincts.

All of them, whatever their character and motivations – from the idealistic young lieutenant Pedro de Alencar, through the malicious little English girl Clarissa Warren, or the somber drug dealer Penabranca, to the vindictive sergeant Francisco Xavier and the exuberant winemaker Martírio, converge on different paths to the lines of Torres, where the final fight must decide the fate of each one.»
