The NEAMWAVE12 tsunami exercise will be carried out at the scale of the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean, on the 27th and 28th of November.

This exercise, which involves the participation of 19 countries and is part of the activities of the Tsunami Warning System for the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean and Related Seas (NEAMTWS), under implementation under the coordination of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, has as objectives It is essential to test communications between candidates for regional alert center (NOA/Greece, KOERI/Turkey, CENALT/France and IPMA/Portugal) and the entities responsible for managing emergencies in each country, and the capacity of the latter to deal with the tsunami threat.

Four tsunami scenarios will be used, one of which for the Northeast Atlantic, which will be managed by IPMA as a candidate for regional alert center for this area of ​​the globe.

This scenario seeks to reproduce the tsunami triggered by the great earthquake of 1755, originating SW of Cabo de S.Vicente and with an estimated magnitude of 8.7 (seismic moment magnitude).
