Amazingly, in the current national and international situation, a small investment will be made in the Algarve aimed at environmental improvement. We are talking here about the cleaning of the Ribeira dos Machados that will be carried out by the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel.

The streams are a structuring part of the landscape, constituting ecological corridors with the highest levels of biodiversity.

Thus, it is of utmost importance to maintain these corridors and above all to develop projects aimed at improving them.

Interventions at the level of water lines, whether large rivers or small streams, must always take into account the spatiality of a water line, that is, they must be interpreted as interventions that jeopardize a series of factors, including safety of populations and assets, whether these are located downstream or upstream of the intervention.

Only taking into account the effects that an intervention at the level of a water line has, it is possible to intervene with awareness, predicting the behavior of the stream and preventing natural disasters such as floods.

In Ribeira dos Machados, apparently, such premises are not known, since, according to the news that reached me, the intervention to be carried out, which will include a cleaning, the implementation of information panels and the execution of a leisure space , will only be carried out on the section that is within the administrative limits of the municipality.

In other words, the remaining sections of the water line will not be covered, leading to the occurrence of future problems, such as appropriation by exotic vegetation on the banks, accumulation of debris in uninterventioned areas, generating retention basins upstream, which may cause floods, among others.

So I leave a question in the air: won't the mistakes of the past make political decision makers understand, once and for all, that the territory is not managed by administrative boundaries, having to be assumed as a whole?
