The launch of the book “Legado do Conde de Ferreira no Algarve”, by Idalina Rodrigues, is scheduled for November 24, at 16 pm, at the Convento Espírito Santo Art Gallery, in Loulé. The presentation will be in charge of Helena Batista, Senior Inspector at the Regional Delegation of the Algarve of the IGE.

Merchant and philanthropist, Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos – Conde de Ferreira was born on October 4, 1782, in Vila Meã, in the Douro region.

Emigrant in Brazil, he organized and boosted a colonial economy. Upon returning to Porto, he committed himself to the “Cabralista” cause, through a mechanism of social projection leading to nobility: Par do Reino, by royal charter of May 3, 1842; Baron on October 7, 1842; Viscount on June 21, 1843; Count on August 6, 1850.

Aware of the situation in Portugal in the context of school buildings and considering public education an essential element for the good of society, he bequeathed the sum of 144.000$000 réis, intended for the construction of 120 houses for primary schools of both sexes .

He died on March 24, 1866, at his residence in Bonfim, Porto. It was in his will that the “Count of Ferreira” made clear testimony of the altruistic feelings he possessed. This work focuses on the role it played in public education in the Algarve.

The author of the book, Idalina Maria Rocheta Rodrigues, was born on December 19, 1942, in Pereiras-Quarteira, municipality of Loulé.
Graduated from the School of Primary Teaching of Faro, in 1964, he taught in the municipalities of Portimão, Silves, Loulé, Lagoa and Lagos. Graduated in School Administration, in 1993, by the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences, in Odivelas.

It carried out the research and institutional intervention work, approved by the Scientific Pedagogical Council of the Instituto Superior de Ciências Educativas, entitled “Algarvian Cosmopolitanism and its Insertion in the School Institution”.

She is a trainer in the area of ​​Personal and Social Training.

Teacher requested in inspection functions, at the Alentejo Regional Delegation of the General Education Inspectorate, from 1994/95 to 1999/2000, she completed, among others, the following projects: New assessment system; functioning of EBIS; pedagogical management; participation in working groups at the level of the Alentejo Regional Delegation of the General Inspectorate of Education; pedagogical audit of the functioning of basic education establishments; joint action with the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of Labor, in Kindergartens; integrated assessment of schools, in vertical and horizontal clusters.

She has been retired since 2003, but as a volunteer she teaches the subject of “History of Education”, in Senior Universities of the Lagos Study Center, the Autodidact Senior Association of Portimão and the Portimão Institute of Culture. Dedicated to research. He is president of the Lions Club of Portimão and president of Region F – 2010-2011. She is the author of the book “Momentos da Jubilação” – 1st Edition – April 2011 – registration number 375/2012.
