The Alcoutim Volunteer Firefighters Humanitarian Association, with the services of a home, day center and kindergarten, now offers tai chi classes for its seniors and yoga for children.

The initiative resulted from an agreement between the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Alcoutim and the instructor of the aforementioned eastern sports, Irma Lopes.

Tai chi and yoga are known to be very beneficial practices “for the body, mind and spirit”, says Irma Lopes, adding that since the beginning of classes in June, she has already noticed improvements in both groups, “the children already know the postures, they already practice breathing and relaxation and, above all, they are more concentrated in class, which did not happen before, and the elderly began to improve their mobility and to participate in greater numbers”.

Currently around 20 seniors and 15 children benefit from this initiative. In addition to the benefits inherent to the practices, Irma Lopes says that the project also aimed to bring the Home closer to the community.
