Close to five million euros is the total amount of losses estimated by the Councils of Lagoa and Silves in their municipalities, as a result of the passage of the tornado, on Friday, the 16th. This data was presented yesterday by the mayors Rogério Pinto (Silves) and José Inácio (Lagoa), at a meeting with two ministers and three secretaries of state, in Lisbon.

The most affected municipality was Silves, with a total of 3,7 million euros, of which 1,6 million in damage to public property, and 2,1 million in private.

In Lagoa, according to the report presented by the mayors to the Government, the damages amount to 350 thousand euros in public facilities and 1,1 million in private ones.

Rogério Pinto, mayor of Silves, revealed to Sul Informação that the most expensive restoration is the municipal swimming pools, a project estimated at 383 euros, followed by the Town Hall building (345 thousand), the Parish Council building (228 thousand) and the walls of almedina (210 thousand euros ).

Among the public facilities affected, urban furniture and signage (135 thousand), the building on Rua Serpa Pinto, where the municipal carpentry and metalwork (105 euros) are located, the naked municipal stadium (50 euros) ), green spaces (49.600 euros), the municipal market (47 thousand euros), the castle (37.640), the mortuary (32 thousand), two municipal vehicles (23 thousand euros), the Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório (5700) and finally glasses in the Municipal Library (1500).

Still in Silves, with regard to damages suffered by private individuals, the highlight goes to the Dr. Francisco Vieira Stadium, of Silves Futebol Clube, whose benches and walls collapsed, and to apartments, where marquees and equipment that existed there were destroyed, glass and roofs, as well as solar panels, boilers and satellite dishes, as well as resident vehicles and tourist motorhomes.

In Lagoa, according to Sul Informação Mayor José Inácio, the 350 thousand euros in damages to public equipment refer to the glass and other equipment of the EB 2,3 Jacinto Correia School (30 euros), to the transit school, to the skate park, to a transport bus schools and urban furniture and gardens.

The repair of the pedestrian bridge over the EN125, which was severely damaged and will cost around 52 euros, will be taken over by the highway concessionaire and therefore does not enter into these accounts.

The mayor of Lagoa clarified, however, that his main concern is with the damage suffered by private individuals, as there are six houses and around 80 apartments that are heavily damaged, some of which have lost roofs, doors, windows, glass and furniture. and equipment, not even being able to be inhabited.

The problem is that there are people who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the damages and who, in some cases, have lost all the contents of the apartments, seen doors, windows and roofs fly and still have their cars damaged.

It turns out that, noted the mayor of Lagoa, «there can only be social support for those with a minimum income», which is not the case for most people in the Lagoa Sol and Jardins de Lagoa housing developments, in the new area of the city, where the bulk of the damage is located.

José Inácio also added that, at yesterday's meeting with the five members of the Government in Lisbon, it was decided not to declare a state of emergency, as this “would make insurers completely out of the loop and it would be even worse for people ».

More optimistic seems to be the mayor of the neighboring municipality of Silves. Rogério Pinto highlights the "record time" that the Government took to act in support of municipalities and populations affected by last Friday's tornado. "Not a week has gone by and the Government is already taking decisions", underlined the mayor of Silva, referring to the resolution of the Council of Ministers of tomorrow, Thursday, which will define the terms and amounts of support.

«After the meeting we had yesterday in Lisbon, and having communicated to them the amount and type of damages, they are now studying in their offices the solutions they will present tomorrow», stressed Rogério Pinto. However, he stressed, "they will have to be solutions within legal constraints."
