The Food Bank Against Hunger will once again be in stores across the region this Saturday and Sunday to collect goods for institutions in the 16 Algarve municipalities.

In the second major campaign of 2012, the Algarve Food Bank continues to grow and will be collecting collections in more commercial establishments, as a result of the Algarve's adhesion to the cause, both those who volunteer and those who donate.

According to the responsible for the BACF of the Algarve Nuno Alves, “there are more and more volunteers”, which allows the expansion of collection points, in the case of the tomorrow and Sunday campaign, in 140 stores in all the Algarve's municipalities.

"We are going to be in new stores, which means that there are more people who have volunteered to work with us, we have more transport available," he said, speaking to Rádio Universitária do Algarve RUA FM.

An interest that makes Nuno Alves believe that the goals set will be achieved. “We have 10 to 12 institutions on the waiting list and we would very much like to have a good result in this campaign to be able to absorb these institutions as well. We are talking about two to three thousand people», he said.

One of the great strengths of this institution in the region is the body of volunteers it has, which Nuno Alves calls “exemplary”. “We have 80 permanent volunteers across the region, we don't have a single employee and we have a very low cost structure. Without volunteering we would not be able to survive», he assured.

Anyone who wants to help fight hunger in the region only has to go to a participating establishment, buy food and deliver it to the Food bank team located there. These goods will be sent to the BACF warehouses and subsequently distributed by the institutions supported by it.

Everyone gives what they want or can, but the BACF calls for priority to be given to products such as milk, pasta, rice, oils and oils and canned goods.

“People sometimes think that by donating just a can of tuna or a carton of milk they are giving too little. For us it is a lot, it has the same value as any other donation», stressed Nuno Alves.

The BACF do Algarve has been operating for five and a half years and currently supports 75 institutions and helps more than 20 people across the region. This was the 12th food bank to be opened in Portugal and is now considered the fourth largest in the country.
