Portimonense (II Liga) today was Vila do Conde losing 2-1 to Rio Ave (I Liga), which dictated the premature departure of the Algarve from the Portuguese Cup.
Vilacondenses began to put pressure on and soon Ukra opened the scoring.
Lázaro Oliveira's men tried to react, but striker Horácio ended up missing two goals in the face of Ederson (at 18 and 54 minutes).
It was in the 66th minute that Portimonense reached the tie, with a header by Rúben Fernandes (in the 66m), after a free-kick by Mendes.
Portimonense, again reduced to 9, this time after the expulsions of Erick and Mica, for accumulation of yellow cards, could not turn the result.
On minute 79, João Tomás was brought down in the area by Rúben Fernandes and it was the experienced player in vilacondense who converted the penalty, eventually giving the victory to Rio Ave.
With this result, Rio Ave qualified for the 4th round of the Portuguese Cup and Portimonense was once again on the way.
In this Sunday's other Cup game involving an Algarvian team, Farense (2nd Division) went to Reguengos de Monsaraz to beat the local Atlético, by 0-1, a result that allows those of Faro continue in proof.
The Algarve is still represented in the Portuguese Cup by Olhanense, who this Saturday won 1-3 December 0st, and by Farense.
