This week we learned of the departure of two of the current mayors of the Algarve from the leadership of these municipalities: Desidério Silva was, on Monday, elected president of the Regional Tourism Authority of the Algarve, and will therefore leave the Albufeira Council in the end of the month, while Isabel Soares should be appointed, on November 5th, as the new delegate-administrator of Águas do Algarve, and for that reason she will also leave the Silves Chamber.

Both are PSD mayors and both would no longer be able to run again for their municipal councils in the 2013 municipal elections, due to having already fulfilled the maximum number of mandates allowed by law.

Note that I'm not even here to discuss whether Desidério Silva has the competence to stay ahead of Algarve Tourism or whether Isabel Soares understands something about management to be able to run one of the largest companies in the region.

Although it cannot be hidden that, in both cases, the fact of leaving behind municipalities in the throes of serious financial problems will not be the best calling card for their competence as managers…

It is said that there may still be other positions or positions to be assigned to other mayors equally at the end of their municipal career, whether from the PSD or the PS. The immense machinery of public administration, politics, public or private companies seems to have an inexhaustible capacity to absorb these people.

The point is that, despite all the public manifestations that the current and previous Government has made regarding the need to “eliminate the fat from the State”, the State has gained more and more weight… And, along the way, it is gaining weight a few.

These nominations based on a person's political color – whether with this Government or with the previous ones – in addition to not being good for the bodies they will lead, they are also not good for the image of the people nominated. It's just that, whatever it may be, no matter how good the work they do, they won't get rid of the reputation of this position being nothing more than a pot.
