The Markets of Olhão were formally recognized this week as a Monument of Public Interest (MIP), after the publication of its classification in Diário da República. A "pride for the people of Olho", in the view of the municipality, which will become effective after a period of public consultation of 30 days, if there is no contestation.

The vice-president and councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Olhão António Pina sees this distinction as “a prize for the city of Olhão, after the major restoration works carried out by the municipality in 1998, to the value of 2,5 million euros, emphasizing “the architectural and historical importance of the property” which it considers to be being recognised.

«This proposal shows the importance of one of the city's icons, the Municipal Markets. In good time, the municipality decided to transform and improve the markets, having been one of the first major investments made in the city, and this is the enhancement of our strategy and objective», stated António Pina.

According to the mayor, this classification could “bring greater attention from people interested in architecture and monuments, put Olhão on the MIP list and bring more people to visit the city, visit the markets and then be enchanted by the Ria Formosa », one of the main tourist attractions in the city.
