The City Council of Tavira was forced to "suppress school transport circuits, whether pre-school or 1st cycle of basic education", due to the so-called Law of Commitments, which "removes autonomy from municipalities and prohibits the payment of hours to drivers," said a source of this authority to the Sul Informação.

The Chamber admits that “with this measure, the Law is complied with, but it leaves countless students and their families in difficulties”.

Despite everything, the municipality of Tavira says that it makes "a huge effort by assuming the cost of school transport, in the current school year, in the amount of 380.906,78 euros", an amount that is only covered in a small part by the funds transferred by the State. central. It is because, recalls the city council, the "State Budget provides the Chamber with 56.000 euros, corresponding to students in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade."

As for school canteens, the supply of meals is maintained, with around 1558 lunches a day, on which the City Council will spend 355.760 euros in the school year that has just begun.

As for the staff in schools, the Tavirense autarchy admits that there are problems: «with the retirement of some employees and the termination of the contract of others, there are about a dozen operational assistants left to complete the staff in the educational establishments. However, in view of the Assumption of Commitments Law, it is impossible to contract».

The School Enrichment Activities (AEC), on the other hand, will start in all educational establishments from October 1st, resulting in an investment of 174.160 euros for the Câmara de Tavira.
