Jazz'Arade 2012 ends with the activity «film sessions and conversations “Origin and path: affinities between Jazz and Cinema”».

The sessions, promoted by the Municipality of Silves with the support of the Cineclube de Faro, take place at the House of Islamic and Mediterranean Culture in Silves.

The first session will take place on September 20, at 20:30 pm, with the screening of the film “Bird – the end of the dream”, by Clint Eastwood, which portrays the life and work of influential saxophonist and jazz composer Charlie Parker.

Vítor Reia-Baptista, coordinator of the CIAC/CICCOMA research group Film Studies, Visual Arts and Communication, and Rui Penha, President of ARFA – Regional Philharmonic Association of the Algarve, will be in conversation this evening.

The film sessions and conversations “Origin and course: affinities between Jazz and Cinema” have their second and last action on October 4th, at 21 pm, with the screening of “Round Midnight”, a film about the love of jazz, in a tribute made in 00 by the French director Bertrand Tavernier to the great instrumentalists who, in the 1986s and 40s, went into exile in France.

The evening will end with a reflection by Vítor Reia-Baptista and Hugo Alves, founder of the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, on the theme.

Victor Reia-Baptista He holds a PhD in Communication and a professor in the area of ​​Communication Sciences at the University of Algarve.

He is coordinator of the CIAC/CICCOMA research group Film Studies, Visual Arts and Communication and member of the European Union expert group on media literacy.

He also coordinated the Portuguese team of the following European projects: Educaunet, Glocal Youth, Mediappro, European Charter for Media Literacy and Euromeduc.

President of ARFA – Regional Philharmonic Association of the Algarve, Rui Penha has been adjunct professor at the Superior Institute of Engineering of the University of Algarve for 28 years.

He holds an MBA from the Faculty of Economics at Universidade Nova and a Doctorate (PhD) in Philosophy of Education from the University of London.

Hugo Alves is the founder of AJMMA – Atelier de Jazz e Música do Algarve, the first institution organized for the teaching of Jazz in the Algarve, with a collective of seven teachers at four different levels and the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, which he directs, among many other formations that he leads.

He studied with various names in world jazz such as Scott Wendholt, Randy Brecker or Frank Tiberi, participates in various formations, having lately recorded with names such as Miguel Martins, Greg Burk, Jorge Moniz among others.

He teaches at ESMAE – Porto Superior School of Music and Arts, at ESML – Lisbon Superior School of Music, in subjects such as Trumpet Jazz, Jazz Orchestra, Voice Improvisation, among others, and at the JOBRA Professional School.
