Cleaning Culatra Island, for the benefit of those who live there, humans and others, is the objective of a volunteer action that will take place on September 29th. An initiative open to all who want to lend a helping hand, who will have lunch and guaranteed transportation to and from the Ilha Barreira da Ria Formosa from and to the Commercial Pier in Faro.

To participate, just send an email to the address [email protected] and appear at the Commercial Pier on the 29th, a Saturday, at 8:30 am. The plan is to work in the morning, from 10 am, stop for lunch for an hour and return at 17:30 pm.

“This initiative is justified insofar as the Ilha da Culatra is a shelter for herds of avifauna, playing an essential role in the ecosystem of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. On the other hand, these locations are subject to intense demand and use during the summer months, generating important socio-economic benefits. However, at the end of each bathing season, this island ends up with waste that accumulates on the banks, in the regulfs on the side of the estuary and on the beaches and dunes, pushed by the wind or left by less abiding holidaymakers," he explained in a statement to camera of Faro.

«Given the importance of conservation and protection of the ecosystem, it is necessary to clean these places. It is also necessary to make the population aware of the problem and the importance of conserving this natural area”, added the municipality.

The initiative came from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests in partnership with the City Council, the Association of Residents of Ilha da Culatra and the Administration of the Hydrographic Region of the Algarve.
