APROFIP – Association of Portuguese Indian Fig Professionals promotes on October 6th the National Festival of the Indian Fig, which will take place from 9:30 am at the Portimão School of Hotel and Tourism (EHT), with free entry.

The event will be a moment of interaction between dozens of national producers of this fruit and the program includes a competition, open to the public, in which original recipes will be prepared by professionals in the fields of gastronomy, pastry and cocktails, where the prickly pear or products derivatives must be used at least 20 percent.

The aim of the organizers is to make all participants aware of the socio-economic importance that the production of the Indian fig could represent, in addition to the preservation of the environment, if exploited in a sustainable way and in agro-industrial terms.

The Indian fig has a wide variety of products and by-products that can be used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, allowing the production of juices, jams, cakes, vinegar, ice cream, yogurts, liqueurs, spirits, teas, food colors, forages, oils , etc..

From 15 pm onwards, a lecture will take place on the theme “The importance of the Indian Fig in Portugal”, by the engineer and manager Jack Soifer, former boss of the Swedish company Sweduc and author of several opinion articles on the potential of profits from small businesses.

Soifer addresses the topic of tourism and integration between large and small companies, editing the Skalgarve newsletter, aimed at tourism entrepreneurs, and Carpews, for Nordic entrepreneurs and investors, and is regularly invited to lecture at business associations and universities.

This event, organized by APROFIP in collaboration with EHT, is sponsored by the Municipality of Portimão, among other entities, and the program and registration are available at: http://www.festival-nacional-do-figo-da-india-2012.com/.
